What is superstition?
The American College Dictionary defines superstition as such:
-
a belief or notion entertained, regardless of reason or knowledge, of the ominous significance of a particular thing, circumstance, occurrence, proceeding, or the like.
-
any blindly accepted belief or notion.
-
a system or collection of superstitious beliefs and customs.
-
irrational fear of what is unknown or mysterious, esp. in connection with religion.
Behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner observed what he described as "superstitious" behavior in pigeons. The birds behaved ritualistically in
hopes of being fed from an automated dispenser even though it only
dispensed food at predestined times.
Are we like the pigeons? Are we doomed to behave ritualistically even if we can never change the inevitable?
Or does everything we do make a difference?
